But if you have limited time and arrived here for fast advice, then have a look at our Best Latex Mattresses for 2016 list.
Latex Mattress Buying Guide
Undoubtedly, latex mattress advantages are many, yet, on the other hand, they are also pricey. So, “are latex mattresses worth the money ?” type of questions soundsquite logical, and very often these issues from quiet thoughts transform into verdicts. If you want some fast answer, then I’ll say “definitely they are worth the money” but of course many factors are playing important roles, and that’s why I’ve created this guide to sort things out.
Like any other mattress type, there are a number of details to the latex mattress that you should look out for. Let’s begin with latex mattress types. Here are several types to consider while shopping for latex mattresses.
Do You Need Natural, Synthetic or A Blend of Natural and Synthetic?
It is important to identify the type of latex you want in your, mattress because this might determine the direction your experience with the mattress follows.
- Natural Latex Mattresses – An all-natural latex mattress is one that contains latex that comes straight from the rubber tree. If you are an advocate of products derived from nature, then this is a great choice. These mattresses tend to be more expensive. But, anything for the love of nature, right?
- Synthetic Latex Mattresses – Synthetic latex is man-made latex. The latex is a result of monomer polymerization. This results in a material that will behave in the same way as organic latex. Synthetic latex mattresses are more available and cheaper than the natural latex products.
- Blended Synthetic/Natural Latex Mattresses – Keep in mind that latex mattresses might be all natural, synthetic or a combination of the two. In most cases, the blend will be in an 80% synthetic and a 20% organic mix. At times you will find a balance of 50/50 in the two materials. You should, however, be careful not to get into a trap where the manufacturer claims to have a mattress that is blended and does not indicate the percentage of these two materials. Mixing the two types of latex will bring down the cost of the mattress and offer a balance of the good qualities they have to offer. Blended Latex is my personal choice. You may ask “why”? Well, I’ll bring an example with 24k gold. None of us wear jewellery made from pure gold as it would be too soft. Mixing the gold with other materials makes it harder and more durable. Same is true with Blended latex mattresses: they are more durable ( less expensive ) compared with natural latex mattresses.
Processing Methods, Dunlop or Talalay
The processing method the latex is taken through is important. Latex can either be made through the Dunlop or the Talalay method, depending on the manufacturer and the intended qualities. Though it is not important to understand all the chemistry processes taking part in the making of the latex mattresses, it is important to know the difference brought about by these two processes.
Dunlop is a conventional processing method while Talalay is a modern way that adds extra steps in the Dunlop process. The overall manufacturing for Talalay latex mattresses will take double the time taken by Dunlop, and the increased cost will show in the products pricing. While Dunlop results in a firmer denser mattress, and Talalay gives out a softer and plusher feel. So, it is safe to say that neither of the mattresses is better than the other because it is all about personal preferences. Most mattress companies are stating that Talalay mattresses are the most durable ones in the market ( and the most expensive, too, meanwhile ).
Latex Mattresses with Other Materials
In addition to the all-latex mattresses, some products will combine latex and other materials. Typically, these materials may include memory foam, polyurethane foam, innerspring and sometimes a combination of all of these. In general, an all-latex mattress is more popular than mattresses with a mixture of latex and other materials. This is because of a number of reasons such as off-gassing and loss of support. A latex mattress will not lose shape or support as fast as other forms of mattresses and owners will not have to deal with off gassing.
The most important thing to remember is that a mattress made of all natural, synthetic or a blend of the two is more desirable, and the process used in making the mattress is only important when you are looking for qualities that will make you comfortable.
Before you make the important decision of purchasing a particular latex mattress, it is important to determine the level of firmness you are interested in. Like the other types of mattresses, latex mattresses come in different firmness levels which range from a very firm feel to a plush soft mattress that gives you a sinking feeling. The most important thing to take note of here is the firmness and hardness. Keep in mind that firmness will be provided in kg/m3 (mass per unit volume) while the hardness of the mattress is provided in Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) or kilo-Pascal (kPa).
If you have a chance to test the mattress, this can be a great way to determine whether the mattress you are interested in is the right one for you. If you are buying your mattress online, which is the case nowadays, you will need to read reviews and look at the information on individual mattresses.
The Pinhole Factor
If you look through the mattresses available online or in brick and mortar stores, you will realize that they have a number of pinholes. The pinholes have two uses; they provide proper air flow within the mattress and enhance hygiene. The pinholes provide escape routes for moisture and allow air to flow in and cool it.
The other function of these pinholes is to fine-tune the mattress’s firmness. While it is clear that the materials used in making the latex determine the firmness level, the pinholes also play a major part in the whole process. The number, size, and arrangement of the pinholes will determine the firmness and the experience you have with the latex mattress. Some mattresses will have a uniform arrangement, while others will have specific arrangement and number of pinholes in different parts for enhanced comfort for different body parts. A mattress is not something you buy often, and this is why you need to find the best latex mattresses in 2016 for comfortable sleep and rest.
Multi-layer Latex Mattresses
You may have noticed that while some latex mattresses are a single block, some are made of different layers. The multi-layer mattresses are held together by a comfortable cover, and this makes them look like single layer mattresses. Multi-layer mattresses will offer u number of advantages. The top layers are typically soft, and the bottom layers are firm and used as support bases. You can interchange the layers for a different experience. Another advantage is that you have the choice of eliminating a layer and replacing it with one that meets your needs as per your lifestyle changes.
Though the question of whether you need a multi-layer latex mattress of a single layer depends on you, it is important to note that the multi-layer option is considered a desirable option by many. Again, there is no good or bad when it comes to the number of layers. It’s all a matter of personal preference.
It is crucial to make sure that the mattress you select has been certified. This means that it has passed through a number of tests to determine whether it is fit for human use. A certified mattress meets international standards and this ensures that you are purchasing a high quality mattress. Go for models and brands that have been certified and you will not regret your choice. Most famous certification label you’ll see is CertiPUR-US . Look for this label, if your latex mattresses is mixed with polyurethane foam.
A warranty is a must for products you are going to use for long periods. You might be tempted to buy a mattress without a warranty, but this might work against you with time. If the manufacturer or seller is willing to stand by their product’s quality through a warranty you have no reason to doubt it. A high quality latex mattress will come with a warranty of about 10 years. This just shows that the quality is good enough and you can invest in a mattress knowing that you are buying a good product.
The price tag on a latex mattress will be determined by a number of factors such as the brand, model, size, type of materials and the comfort level. The market is full of latex mattresses, all priced according to these specifications and more. You can get something in different ranges, but the most important thing is what you are looking for in the mattress. As you shop, make sure you buy a durable latex mattress that is comfortable and meets your needs.
